Hi, I have a question on problem 2 of lab 8. I don't really see how to compute the derivative of the formula in the image. I obtain something similar to what is in the solutions but I don't have the diag. It is not clear for me why the derivative will give the diag. Thank you in advance

The confusion comes from the fact the notation is not clear. You should understand that the function \(\phi\) is applied element-wise (python operation) to each component of the vector it takes as input. It is an abuse of notation where a function that takes as input scalars can be made to take vectors as input, and so the general formulae of the derivative should have the diag (you can pick an example and verify it).
