We contacted a lab regarding a project, however after another group was already offered the project. The Professor still offered us to do the same or a similar project given that this was OK from the course administrative side. Is this the case? Is one option to prefer over the other?

yes it is possible to have the same project for several groups. the groups in any case must clearly document their individual contributions in their report. if they share stuff with the other group (such as data preprocessing or evaluation) it also needs to be declared. in the grading feedback in the end, the mentor in the hosting lab will then also comment on the individual contributions done by each group
